Supporting children and young people with family imprisonment
Approximately 200,000 children have a parent sent to prison each year. These children are at risk of poor outcomes including poverty, stigma, isolation and poor mental health.
Research has shown that parental imprisonment has a direct impact on children’s academic attainment, socio-emotional development and behaviour, often escalating to school exclusion or truancy. School support for children with a family member in prison, therefore, is important as it will contribute to improving a range of educational and wellbeing outcomes for a group of children who are at risk of a number of poorer outcomes.
